Information

Please refer to the guidelines for writing a thesis in the didactics of mathematics for all theses.

Admission Thesis
For admission to the First State Examination, it is obligatory according to § 29 LPO I to prepare a written term paper (so-called Zulassungsarbeit). A processing period of six months is planned (Gymnasium teaching profession). Deadlines are February 1 and August 1 of each year. It is recommended to contact a possible supervisor at an early stage. Further information can be found in the Lehramtsprüfungsordnung I (LPO I, § 29) or in the subject examination regulations of the TUM.

Bachelor thesis
In order to obtain the Bachelor of Education degree, students must complete a Bachelor's Thesis. This is part of the Bachelor's examination with 10 credits. The thesis should be written in the 6th semester. If a Bachelor's thesis is written, it can be recognized as an admission thesis, but this is not automatic. Please refer to the pages of the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, Department Educational Sciences (link to the relevant page, please read under Written Thesis/Admission Thesis) for the necessary administrative steps.

Master's Thesis
In order to obtain the Master of Education degree, you must complete a Master's Thesis. For detailed information on the Master's thesis in your program (e.g. duration of work, registration procedure), please refer to the pages of the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, Department Educational Sciences.

Topic and supervision
At the Heinz Nixdorf Endowed Chair for Didactics of Mathematics, the following persons are authorized to evaluate admission theses (so-called topic setters):

  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Obersteiner
  • Dr. Anselm Strohmaier

The supervision of the thesis is usually done by a member of the chair's staff.

Content
The theses are usually not based on purely theoretical questions, but also include the development of test and learning materials and their testing, or cooperation in the conception and evaluation of empirical studies within the research of the chair. Examples for topics and contents of former theses at our chair can be found here.

Seminar on scientific work
We regularly offer the seminar "Scientific Work in Mathematics Didactics". We recommend the participation in this seminar accompanying the final thesis. Participation is obligatory for master theses. You can find out about the current dates of the seminar in TUMonline or under "Teaching ".
