The publication by Sarah Merk, Dr. Dominik Diermann, Katharina Forster und Prof. Dr. Jenna Koenen, "A Criteria-based Assessment Instrument to Assess the Quality of Explanatory Videos in Chemistry Education", has been published in the Journal of Research in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education.
Abstract: The availability and use of instructional and explanatory videos are becoming increasingly important in educational contexts, e.g., due to advancing digitalization and the rising popularity of video platforms. Empirical findings from various subject areas and disciplines examine and postulate relevant quality criteria for these videos. To ensure the positive learning effects of the chosen videos, a qualitative assessment is required based on findings from media education, educational science, and (scientific) subject education. There is a significant research gap in the systematic quality assessment of explanatory videos in chemistry. As a result, an … [continue reading]

08.08.2024 – The TUM-Explorers experience chemistry digitally: Experiments and digital media go hand in hand
On August 7th and 8th, the "TUM Explorers" attended a workshop led by Katharina Forster and Dominik Diermann. The title was "Chemistry Goes Digital: Experience Chemistry Experimentally and Digitally!" The students were able to conduct the DEANs completed by the students from the "Innovations in Science Education (Chemistry)" module. The students were able to conduct experiments independently and were supported by the digital experiment assistants. This took place under the supervision of the students, who were delighted to see the results of their work. The students also discovered other applications of digital media in connection with chemistry. From titration robots made of Lego bricks to AR glasses, there was plenty to try out and experiment with.
In addition to digital media, the focus was on the students' individual actions and decision-making, which allowed them to gain some interesting experiences and the desire to learn more about it. We, too, are already looking forward to the TUM-Explorers next year!
