Ethical integration of learner data into educational practices is of great importance in the context of data-rich technologies now deeply embedded in educational practices. To address the high expectations of stakeholders around the privacy of learner data, researchers are actively developing policies and frameworks to guide the ethics of educational data, as well as enhancing algorithms to ensure privacy and equity. Yet, there is also a need for ethical practices that ensure active involvement from learners when they decide on their data, and at the moment such practices are limited. Despite common agreement that learners need agency when deciding on what to do with their data, current ethics-related solutions are not participatory beyond simply putting an option to consent in front of a learner. To innovate in this area, we propose a novel practice to support learning analytics – an eLAborate intervention. The intervention envisions that, prior to deciding if technology should record their data, learners could elaborate on this decision. Such a practice has potential to enable a properly informed and participatory consent and enhance the ethics of using of learner data in educational technologies.
