Research Synthesis STEM Schools

Many schools in Germany are focusing on expanding STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology). The STEM-Schools project provides suggestions on how schools can ideally design STEM focal points and shows how these affect students' competencies, interests and career orientation. The basis is a research synthesis on the topic with an overview of the international state of research. This is supplemented by an analysis of 24 schools with a STEM focus in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony. The aim is to provide teachers and schools with ideas for STEM development at their own schools based on best-practice examples.

Research Questions

  • How can STEM foci be successfully established in schools?
  • What makes existing STEM foci in schools stand out?
  • How are STEM focuses at schools related to the acquisition of competencies by students?

  • Human resources in the form of dedicated teachers and supportive school administrators
