LeSKI: Dialogic, Formative Writing Feedback

Description
Regular feedback is important for effective learning, but teachers in traditional classroom settings only have limited capacity to give students feedback. In the LeSKI project (Lerne Schreiben mit KI), the Chair for Human-Centered Technologies for Learning is collaborating with eKidz.eu GmbH to develop a novel AI-driven writing feedback tool for children in grades 4 to 6. The key innovation of the project is its focus on formative feedback, i.e., the AI tutor will interactively help the student while they are writing the essay, instead of merely assessing a finished essay. The challenge is that the AI tutor should not write the essay for the student, but help the student learn effective writing. To this end, we will prompt and fine-tune LLMs to give age-appropriate dialogic feedback, modeled after how human teachers would give feedback. The project will also investigate how mechanisms like gamification can help increase students’ motivation and curiosity in order to facilitate active participation and feedback seeking behavior, which are key to effective feedback.
