The project investigates young children’s efficiency in searching for information
By age three, children can already recognize the statistical features of their learning environment and adapt their learning strategies accordingly. However, it remains unclear whether young children can generate (cf. merely identify) efficient adaptive information-search strategies from scratch. In the current study, we tested the emergence of children’s ability to generate adaptive information-search actions and explored the potential sources of their suboptimality.

Are you interested in how children and adults ask questions and assess their effectiveness? Our study investigates how expected information gain influences question-asking strategies across different age groups. Research has shown that even infants as young as 18 months persist in asking questions when they don't receive informative answers, while preschoolers tend to choose knowledgeable informants to get the best responses. As children grow, they adapt their questioning techniques based on the task and feedback, typically developing adult-like questioning skills around age 10.
In our tablet study, we will investigate how both children and adults evaluate the effectiveness of questions based on anticipated information gain and whether the type of question affects their assessments. Participants will also identify the most informative questions when considering various hypotheses.

Call for Bachelor's / Master's Thesis: cTc - Competition between Triggers of Curiosity
Considerable studies have shown that our curiosity will be piqued if situational features such as novelty, uncertainty, or surprise are perceived. However, it remains unclear how children, often surrounded by much information, allocate their attention and become curious when different triggers are simultaneously present and competing. This project aims to investigate how children attend to, explore, and learn in the face of stimuli that trigger their curiosity with different features.

Call for Bachelor's Thesis: MonsterChef
MonsterChef explores the emergence and developmental trajectory of children's understanding of when they should engage in self-guided learning in a task and when they should seek the help of a teacher. The experiment seeks to elucidate the cues and strategies children use at different developmental stages to determine how to pursue their learning goals.
Requirements: German fluency would be needed in order to help with data collection. The data collection will start earliest in January,

Call for Bachelor's / Master's Thesis: Flex
Many studies have shown that children consider the characteristics of agents when deciding whom to be partners with or whom to learn from. However, it remains unclear whether children are choosing their partners flexibly based on the characteristics of the environment. This project aims to explore whether children are using agent characteristics of potential partners based on the differences in the environment.
