Art Works for Change Playbook

Art Works for Change is a playbook designed to help educators, community organizations, and artists clearly demonstrate the profound social value of arts-based education for young people. It provides accessible tools to measure and communicate the often-overlooked benefits of creative activities, such as improved well-being, social-emotional learning, social cohesion, and stronger relationships with themselves, others, and society.

To help educators tell a richer, evidence-backed story about their work, the playbook utilizes two complementary frameworks:

• Theory of Change (ToC): A structured methodology that maps out how specific arts-based activities directly lead to long-term social and personal growth.
• Social Return on Investment (SROI): A complementary approach that helps translate social, emotional, and cognitive benefits into a shared language of value and makes the impact clear to external stakeholders and funders.

Beyond the core methodologies, the playbook provides practical resources to help educators apply these concepts in their own programs through seven case studies from across Europe and step-by-step templates and reflective activities. Together, these resources illustrate how the Theory of Change and SROI frameworks can be applied in practice and support practitioners in developing and evaluating their own initiatives.
